Signs It’s Time To Replace Your Air Conditioning Unit
An air conditioning unit is one of the most important pieces of HVAC equipment for many homeowners. If you happen to live in any climate warmer than 20 degrees, they contribute to making summer much more comfortable for you and your family.
But when your air conditioner stops working, especially during a heat wave, it can spell immense discomfort.
There are several things to watch out for that indicate if your air conditioner is no longer working optimally. This is also why our experts here at QuickFast Service Co. recommend a maintenance plan for your HVAC equipment. By having a knowledgeable technician checking your air conditioner at the beginning of the season, you can address any issues before they become a bigger problem.
Here are a few common signs that it’s time to replace your air conditioning unit:
- Your AC unit is less than a 13 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) - The minimum requirement here in Ontario is a 13 SEER, however these units are now being phased out and replaced by 16 SEER with 23 SEER being the highest. In addition, refrigerant standards tend to change every 10 years, based on efficiency and ozone depletion chemicals that are no longer being used. Older air conditioners use older refrigerant (R22), however this has been obsolete since 2009.
- Your air conditioner is making odd sounds - Normally, if your air conditioner is no longer working properly, it will continue to get louder and louder as the compressor begins working harder. You may also hear sounds like grinding or squeaking, which are all signs the equipment is not working at optimal condition, which could indicate that internal mechanical issues are starting to fail.
- Your hydro bills are increasing- Have you noticed your hydro bills continue to go up, despite not touching the thermostat? If you are seeing a noticeable increase in your bills, it’s a signal that your air conditioning unit may need to be replaced. Due to a loss of efficiency due to aging.
- You have to repair your AC unit frequently - If you find your air conditioner breaking down more often, despite keeping up with your regular maintenance plan, you likely should consider replacing it. But by continuing to repair a system that needs to be replaced, you’ll not only spend more money in the long run on the unit itself, you’ll also be spending more on your energy bills.
- The temperature in your house isn’t lowering - If your air conditioner isn’t working, you’ll likely notice that although it’s turned on, the temperature in your home isn’t cooling. You may even notice warm air coming out of your vents instead of cool air. This can point to issues with airflow (such as a blockage), low refrigerant, a malfunctioning part or lack of maintenance, which are all contributing factors indicating that the AC unit is no longer working.
- Weak airflow - When you turn your air conditioner on, you expect to feel cool air blowing out of your vents. But if your vents are producing little to no airflow, this certainly points to a problem. Motor or fan issues or even blockages could be a contributing factor, but you want to have this looked at by a licensed and certified HVAC technician as soon as possible. - You notice large amounts of water around your AC unit - Condensation is normal however if you have any sort of coolant leakage or airflow blockages, it can cause larger amounts of water around your air conditioning unit causing significant damage to your home and to your HVAC equipment.
- Bad smells - any foul smells coming from your air conditioner or through your vents while your air conditioner is running, signals a problem. Your air conditioner should result in neutral smelling air. But any musty smells could indicate an issue with mold inside your unit, and any stronger smells, such as a burning smell, can indicate an electrical issue that requires immediate attention.
If your air conditioner needs to be replaced, there are other options than just outright purchasing a new unit.
