With March seeing some of the heaviest snowfall in the GTA and surrounding areas, including Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, Brampton, Vaughan, Milton, Georgetown, Etobicoke, North York, Markham, Hamilton, and Richmond Hill, it’s hard to imagine spring is just around the corner.
But as we transition seasons, it’s important to consider what needs to be done around your home to prepare it for warmer weather.
From transitioning your HVAC system to ensuring window wells and gutters are clear of debris, ensuring you’ve transitioned your home will help you get ahead (or prevent) potential problems in the coming months.
Here at QuickFast Service Co., we understand the importance of regular maintenance and catastrophic issues that can happen when mechanical equipment in your home is neglected.
When the warmer weather arrives, many homeowners simply turn off their heating system and don’t give it another thought until they start using their air conditioning. The issue is that the filters in your HVAC equipment can become clogged after the winter, with windows closed for long durations.
In addition, after the snow is on top of your air conditioning unit, there is always a chance of rust buildup or corrosion. So you’ll also want to make sure that your air conditioning unit is functioning properly.
We highly suggest signing up for a regular maintenance program to ensure your equipment is in top shape. Our maintenance programs are twice a year, with inspections occurring in spring and fall. Our knowledgeable and licensed technicians will fully inspect your indoor and outdoor HVAC equipment, ensuring everything is running properly. We will also be able to catch any issues and make recommendations for repair or replacement if needed.
In addition to ensuring your mechanical equipment is in proper working order, here are a few tips to help transition your home from winter to spring.
Especially during the fall when leaves are falling rapidly, our eavestroughs, pipes, and window wells can be impacted by debris buildup. So even if you cleaned them in the fall, there is a potential that buildup occurred and was covered by snow during the winter months.
Once the snow begins to melt, it’s extremely important to ensure window wells are cleaned out to prevent flooding. It will only be a matter of time before excess water that sits in window wells, trapped by debris, starts to leak through the windows and into your basement.
In addition, making sure your eavestroughs are clear of leaves, twigs, and debris will go a long way in preventing any flooding. After all, you want water draining AWAY from your home, not into it.
With months of windows closed, dust can accumulate quickly in your house. And your air ducts are no exception. Dust, pet dander and allergens can get trapped in your vents and ducts and will continue being pumped through your house if they aren’t cleaned.
You’ll also want to look at replacing the air filters in your furnace and air conditioning unit, as the old ones likely have some buildup.
Winter and frozen pipes tend to go together, and even if you had no issues with this during the winter, you want to ensure your drains are all draining properly.
Try pouring vinegar, and a bucket of water into your floor drains to get everything moving, and filling up your kitchen sink with water, then opening the drain cap to allow water to flow through with more force.
Keep your eye out for anything that might be causing your drains to be clogged, such as debris or hair. It’s a good idea to do this on a regular basis, regardless of the time of year.
You’ll also want to ensure that any backflow valves you have are working, and if you live in an area where sewers sometimes backup, this may be a good time to look at installing a backflow valve to prevent any issues with a sewer backup in your home.
